The WOLF ([W]ord [O]riented [L]inquistic [F]ramework is part of the ACORNS suite of applications, originally developed to support indigenous tribal efforts to restore language and culture. It can be used with any language and can freely be downloaded and installed for non-commercial use. Full documentation can be found at https://cs.sou.edu/~harveyd/wolf or at http://acornslinguistics.com

This application provides an easy to use interface enabling users to create indigenous dictionaries. A single WOLF dictionary can contain multiple dialects and/or languages. It uses a drag-and-drop mechanism to easily attach audio, video clips, and/or pictures to words, definitions, and examples. With a single click, WOLF creates a self-contained Website that can be uploaded to a Web-service provider and integrated into a language-based website. It also is able to create a mobile version that can be executed on Apple and Android tablets/phones using the Acorns Gallery application.. User-defined templates allow for custom dictionary presentations. Output can be directly to the printer, or if the user desires, the output can be written either in PDF or RTF file formats.

WOLF follows the best-practice principles for language work. It conforms to the GOLD specifications for ontology and provides import/export options that generate XML enabling its dictionaries to be available for integration with external applications.

Since, many linguists use SIL applications, WOLF can import those dictionaries that are created using the MDF format. It supports the entire MDF definition set.
